Receiving the award on behalf of the Borough Council, Local Ward
Member, Cllr Neil Lewis commented: “The Garn Lakes project is a
fantastic achievement for the whole of Wales, right here on the
doorstep of a World Heritage Site, thanks should go to the staff
at TCBC for their dedication”.
The Award was presented to Cllr Lewis by the immediate-past
National Chairman of CPRW Morlais Owens and Stuart Taylor, Head of
External relations with the Post Office (the Award sponsors).
Steve Williams, Senior Ecologist explained how the former open
cast site had been transformed through a series of phased
developments including grassland and wetland management into an
area that has now been designated as a Local Nature Reserve.
CPRW Branch Chairman Vic Warren congratulated the Torfaen County
Borough Council on their third Rural Wales Award and its excellent
work in supporting the local environment and heritage. He added:
“It really is a superb enhancement. The Garn Lakes are a fine
example of a countryside facility benefiting the local community
and visitors alike”.
