Elan Valley Trust win environmental award

The Dwr Cymru/Welsh Water Elan Valley Trust has been awarded a prestigious environmental award. The award, presented by the Radnorshire Branch of the Campaign for the Protection of Rural Wales, has been given in recognition of the sympathetic restoration of a traditional Welsh Longhouse within the Elan Valley.

The Longhouse, Llanerch-y-Cawr, is situated at the head of the Caban Coch Reservoir close to the confluence of the Claerwen and Rhiwnant rivers. The house is a rare surviving example of a late 15th century medieval hall that later evolved into a storeyed longhouse.

The Architects, the Garner Southall Partnership of Llandrindod, were appointed to undertake the intricate work of detailing the existing building and drawing up the proposed project, and C.S.Sneade of Newtown undertook the restoration works. The project completed in 1999, was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and CADW, and now offers holiday accommodation in the spectacular setting of the Elan Valley.

The Rural Wales Award was presented on 7th November at Llanerch-y-Cawr. CPRW Branch Chairman, Christopher Harding introduced Andrew Leonard of the Elan Valley Trust and Mike Garner, the Architect. An engraved plaque and a certificate were presented by CPRW National Chairman, Mr Morlais Owens and Mr Stuart Taylor, Head of Public Relations with the Post Office (The Rural Wales Award sponsors). The Elan Valley Trust, manages 17,400 ha within the Elan Valley, and has a remit to promote conservation, access and education.

Their vision in restoring this magnificent longhouse will not only enable future visitors to the Valley to appreciate this fine example of vernacular architecture, but also encourage people to stay in, and appreciate the wild beauty of Radnorshire.
