The Newport & Valleys Branch of the Campaign for the Protection of
Rural Wales (CPRW) has presented their annual Rural Wales Award to
an innovative partnership, that between them has led to the
regeneration of a local wildlife and woodland area at Roseheyworth
near Brynmnawr, for use by the entire community.
Invited guests joined with Maggie Edmunds, Head Teacher of the
Roseheyworth Millennium School and the pupils at a special school
assembly to celebrate the achievements gained by this community
inspired project.
Brian Paget, Chairman of the Arael View Tenants & Residents
Association joined with Rene Le Huquet (former Secretary of the T
& R Association) to describe the enormous community effort that
gone into the project. Rene described how the local residents and
schoolchildren designed the plans for the development of the wild
area adjacent to their homes and school. As well as being well
used by the neighbouring residents, children from Roseheyworth and
neighbouring schools (including the local comprehensive) make good
use of the woodlands for lessons and summer schools in their
‘outdoor classroom’. The scheme has been made possible due to
generous support given by the Blaenau Gwent County Borough
Council, the Welsh Development Agency and Cyd Coed.
CPRW’s National Chairman, Morlais Owen, congratulated everyone
involved and commented: “It’s tremendous to see elements of the
community working together to produce an asset for all of the
local community to enjoy. This project is highly worthy of a Rural
Wales Award.”
The certificates were presented on behalf of CPRW by Stuart
Taylor, Head of External Relations with the Post Office (the Award
sponsors) to: members of Roseheyworth Millennium School’s Eco
Committee; Brian Paget, Chairman of the Arael View Tenants and
Residents Association; the Roseheyworth Millennium Primary School
and new Mayor of Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council-Cllr.
Wilcox, attending his first official engagement. Margaret Hunt,
Secretary of the Newport & Valleys CPRW Branch also presented the
children with a cheque for £50 to be used for tree planting in the
woodland.
