Pen Caer is the peninsula on which Strumble Head Light stands on the North Pembrokeshire coast. This view of the peninsula is from the orchard above the artist's house. Looking across the valley to the north, Garn Fawr and Garn Fechan form the silhouette on the skyline and to the left is Pwll Deri.

Stan Rosenthal was born in London in 1933 and decided to become a painter at the age of nine. He attended Southend and Leicester Colleges of Art before gaining a degree from University College, Cardiff where he later taught. Other teaching posts included the South Glamorgan Institute of Higher Education and Cardiff College of Art. His paintings have been exhibited widely.
He revisited Pembrokeshire in 1988 and immediately fell in love with the everchanging quality of the light and the nature of the landscape. In 2001, Stan opened a studio and gallery at Plas-yMabws in Mabws Fawr which is about half way between St David's and Fishguard, just south of Mathry below the A487 (www.stanrosenthal.com).
Amongst many honours bestowed on him, Stan was appointed Honorary Official Artist to the Chairman of Pembrokeshire County Council in 1996.
Stan Rosenthal discovered pen Caer when searching, with his wife Nicola, for the cottage belonging to one of his heroes, Johh Piper. When they found it, and looked about them, they had their first glimpse of Plas-y-Mabws where they set up home six years later.
