Viability of sustainable housing in protected areas


This is a report of a study of the viability of providing sustainable housing in protected areas. The area known as the Brecon Beacons National Park (BBNP) has been the focus for the study as it represents a typical context for protected areas.

The study was carried out by the Design Research Unit of the Welsh School of Architecture and it was commissioned by the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority (BBNPA) and the Campaign for the Protection of Rural Wales (CPRW). The research was funded by the Sustainable Development Fund and the Countryside Council for Wales.
